Taking a vacation doesn’t mean you have to take a break from your fitness goals. However, new exercisers may not have established the habit securely enough to prevent post-vacation dropout from their routine. With a little planning, you can stay healthy and energized while enjoying your time off.
Pre-Vacation Fitness Planning
Encourage your clients or students to prepare ahead by researching options for exercise and movement at their destination. This keeps the momentum going and avoids excuses to stop altogether.
Check Hotel/Motel Amenities
- Is there an exercise room or swimming pool?
- Are there recreational activities nearby – biking trails, skating paths, parks, or jogging routes?
- Is a fitness center (YMCA, gym) available to guests?
- What gear or clothing is needed for outdoor or indoor workouts?
Set Aside Time to Move
- Plan 30 minutes of activity at least 3–4 times a week.
- If driving long distances, get out and walk briskly at every rest stop.
- Use layovers to walk around the terminal instead of sitting for hours.
Pack a “Workout in a Suitcase”
- Rubber resistance bands or tubing for strength work.
- Jump rope for cardio anywhere.
- Bodyweight exercises like pushups, squats, lunges, and ab work need no equipment.
- Stretch daily to stay limber and reduce soreness. Consider our flexibility tips.
Motivate and Track Progress
